Has your health been seriously affected by textured breast implants you thought were safe?
Whether for breast reconstruction after a mastectomy or for cosmetic augmentation, the number of women getting breast implants in the US has sky rocketed in the last few decades. While originally thought to be harmless, textured implants have been associated with an increased risk for developing cancer.
Textured implants, which were designed to adhere to the surrounding chest tissue for a more natural look and feel than smooth surfaced implants, have been shown to increase the risk of developing a rare immune system cancer called Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL). According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, silicone breast implants with a textured surface are 400 times more likely to cause this rare type of cancer than smooth surfaced breast implants. The FDA continues to identify the implants that have been recalled and is a good reference for further information.
